Under the Regulated Health Professions Act, the NSRD regulates dietitians and nutritionists practising in Nova Scotia to serve the public interest. It sets standards for training, licensing, and professional conduct, addresses complaints, and promotes the ongoing competence of dietitians and nutritionists for the benefit of Nova Scotians.

As the only regulatory body for dietitians and nutritionist in Nova Scotia, any professional who is not licensed is not a dietitian and therefore the service they provide is not regulated. Titles protected include:
