Professional Liability Insurance
All dietitians must hold individual professional liability insurance with a minimum of $5,000,000 in coverage per occurrence before engaging in dietetic practice, whether paid or volunteer.
Why insurance is required
Section 60 of the Regulated Health Professions Act requires registrants to maintain professional liability insurance or other liability protection as required by the Board.
Professional liability insurance protects the public by providing a source of financial compensation for damages that may be awarded if a dietitian causes harm while providing professional services. It also provides protection for dietitians against claims alleging negligence, errors or omissions in their professional practice.
Insurance requirements
Your policy must meet all of the following requirements:
- Coverage: At least $5,000,000 per occurrence.
- Individual coverage: The policy must be in your own name. Employer-provided insurance alone does not meet NSRD’s requirements.
- Legal expense endorsement: The policy must include legal expense endorsement insurance.
- Continuous coverage: You must maintain insurance continuously while engaging in dietetic practice.
- Coverage for claims: Your policy must cover claims arising from services provided during the period of coverage. This must be met through one of the following options:
- Occurrence-based policy: Covers incidents that occur during the policy period, regardless of when a claim is made.
- Claims-made policy: Must include an extended reporting period (ERP) of at least two years. If the insurer does not provide the ERP at the start of the policy, you must obtain it when the policy ends.
Proof of insurance
You must submit proof of insurance before NSRD issues or renews an active-practice licence. You must also maintain current proof of insurance in your NSRD Registrant Portal profile at all times. This means updating your profile whenever your policy is renewed or your insurance information changes.
Your insurance document must include:
- Insurer’s name
- Insured’s name
- Policy number
- Effective and expiration dates
- Coverage amount
- Any additional information reasonably requested by NSRD
Upload your insurance document to your NSRD Registrant Portal profile. If you need help updating your profile, refer to the guide to adding insurance to your profile.
NSRD conducts regular insurance audits. If you do not maintain current insurance documentation in your profile, your licence may be suspended and your employer may be notified. Your licence may be reinstated once you provide satisfactory evidence of current insurance and pay the applicable reinstatement fine.
You must not practise dietetics without the required professional liability insurance.
